Other Tests Available from ADDL

There are a variety of diseases afflicting the animal population of Indiana.
In addition to the services listed for each lab section, the following are also available.

  1. Antibiotic susceptibility tests of isolates recovered. Please be sure to indicate on the Accession Form that you want such tests performed.

  2. Identification of bacterial isolates. Please send only pure cultures for identification. If mixed cultures are received, only the most predominant colony type will be identified.

  3. Serogrouping of Salmonella spp. Salmonella isolates are grouped at Purdue and the isolate forwarded to NVSL for definitive typing. It takes about three to four weeks to receive a report from NVSL.

  4. Return of isolates recovered from clinical material to the referring veterinarian. If you would like this service, PLEASE indicate it at the time of submission of the material. The fee is $15.00 per isolate.

  5. All Streptococcus suis isolates are checked against antisera 1, 1/2, and 2 through 8.

  6. Actinobacillus (Hemophilus) pleuropneumoniae isolates are checked against antisera 1, 3, 5, and 7.

Some tests that are not performed at Purdue are available at other laboratories. These include:

  1. Serotyping of E. coli isolates. We will isolate and identify E. coli for you, but we do not serotype them. However, if you request, we will return the isolate to you so that you can forward it to one of the following for serotyping.

    Dr. Erwin M. Kohler
Ohio Agricultural Research & Development Center
    Wooster, Ohio 44691
    Phone: 216-263-3700

Dr. Kohler tests E. coli isolates for enteropathogenicity in ligated intestinal loops.
He also uses the slide agglutination test for determining the O and K antigens. These tests apply most especially to porcine isolates. The cost is $10.00 per isolate.

    E. coli Reference Center
    105 Henning Building
    University Park, PA. 16802
    Phone: 814-863-2630

The E. coli Reference Center determines the complete serotype as well as the toxins produced by using probes. Their fee is $35.00 per isolate.

  2. Cultural examination for bovine Campylobacter and Trichomonas is done at the University of Wisconsin. Call Dr. Max Barth at 608-266-2465 for instructions on specimen collection and shipment. The fee is also also 2.50 per test.
  1. Surveys of herds of cattle for Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Contact Tom Hooper at the Southern Indiana Branch of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory for this service. The phone number is 812-678-3401.
  1. Cultural examinations for contagious equine metritis (CEM) submitted to the Purdue Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory are forwarded to NVSL for processing. The Breathitt Veterinary Center, P. O. Box 1000, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, 42240 will accept submissions for cultural examination for CEM. Specimens must be submitted in Aimes Transport medium which is available from either G. S. Media/Scott Laboratory, phone (606)-252-1429 or the Rood and Riddle Veterinary Clinic, phone (606)-233-0371. The cultural examination takes up to seven days.
