Avian: Miscellaneous Specimens

- Feed submitted for chemical analysis should be placed in a paper
bag and accompanied by a copy of the feed tag or formulation.
Approximately one to two pounds of feed is adequate.
- Water samples submitted for analysis should be placed in a one
liter sterile glass container.
- Tissues submitted for bacterial or viral culture should be collected
aseptically and packaged individually in labeled whirl-pak bags.
Place individual whirl-paks into a single air tight container.
Refrigerate tissue samples immediately. Tissues which cannot be
delivered to ADDL within 24 hours of collection should be frozen.
- Refrigerated samples can be shipped packed with ice or chill-pak
bags. Frozen samples must be shipped in dry ice. Place specimens
to be shipped in leakproof insulated containers which comply with
postal or commercial carrier specifications. Ship specimens early
in the week to avoid weekend delivery.
- Swab samples submitted for culture should be placed in appropriate
transport media and shipped like tissue specimens.
- Transport media for Chlamydia psittacii may be obtained from
the avian section.
- An experimental chlamydia ELISA test is being evaluated. Check
with the avian section for information concerning this procedure.
