hooser 2.jpg Greetings from the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue!  As it has always been, the ADDL remains Indiana's full-service, fully accredited diagnostic laboratory, responsive to the needs of animal owners, veterinarians, and animal agriculture.  Like all fine institutions, and life itself, the ADDL undergoes periodic changes.  Now is such a time.  After 23 years of loyal and devoted service to the State of Indiana and the community, Dr. Leon Thacker stepped down as ADDL Director on August 1.
As a consequence of that change, it is my honor to be able to extend a welcome as the new Director.  I am pleased to be able to announce that, in addition to the dedicated, hard-working staff that work in the ADDL, we have several new additions to the faculty and staff.Dr. Thacker continues to work part-time as a diagnostic pathologist and teacher, seeing necropsy cases and teaching in the School of Veterinary Medicine.  In addition Dr. Pam Mouser, who recently passed the examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, has been hired to work in Pathology until next summer.  Because of the departure of Dr. Greg Stevenson earlier this year, the Pathology section has been in need of assistance.  Drs. Thacker and Mouser are helping to fill this need in the short term.

The ADDL is also very pleased to welcome Dr. Pat Wakenell as Co-Head of the Avian Section.  As you will read in the newsletter, Dr. Wakenell brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and a wardrobe of poultry clothes and accessories to the position.  Although only on campus a short time, she has already been visiting the poultry industry around the state and has enthusiastic ideas for the section and for teaching poultry medicine in the SVM.  In addition, due to the appointment of the Head of the Toxicology Section to Director (my former position), a new Head of Toxicology was needed to direct  the section, to be available to communicate with veterinarians and animal owners, and to help teach toxicology in the SVM.  This position has been filled internally by our Head Chemist, Dr. Christina Wilson, who is now a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Head of the Toxicology Section.  Looking over the list of section heads at the end of this newsletter, it can be seen that our other sections continue to be lead by extremely capable, energetic and enthusiastic individuals, all of whom are also leaders in their respective fields.  Those sections are staffed by equally able and dedicated staff who diligently serve the community even in the face of personnel cut-backs in all sections.  In future newsletters, we will highlight other members of the faculty and staff.

As the new Director, I ask for your ideas and input as to how the ADDL can serve the needs of Indiana even better and, with your help, the ADDL will continue in its objective to: "Provide accurate and prompt diagnostics service to veterinary practitioners, animal producers, companion animal owners, wildlife conservationists, animal researchers and state/federal regulatory officials."
